World Mental Health Day: Why It Matters

October 07, 2025

According to WHO, World Mental Health Day 2025 is an opportunity to make people more aware of mental health experiences around the world—and turn that awareness into action.

This year’s theme, “Mental Health in Humanitarian Emergencies,” calls on us to recognize that when catastrophe strikes, emotional wounds often last longer than physical ones.

Yet, in many emergencies, the response prioritizes physical survival – food, water, shelter – and mental health is often an afterthought. World Mental Health Day reminds us that healing minds is part of rebuilding lives.

Building Awareness

Emotional distress is a normal reaction to extremely stressful situations. However, in humanitarian emergencies, displacement, loss, trauma, and fractured community support make it even more difficult to move forward once the immediate danger has passed. Vulnerable groups, such as refugees, displaced persons, and those with preexisting conditions, face higher barriers to accessing care.

WHO emphasizes that mental health support must be integrated early and continuously in humanitarian response — not just as a later add-on. Investment in mental health is investment in resilience, recovery, and stronger communities.

What Can Organizations Do?

Raise awareness: Use this day to spotlight mental health in your organization or community. Mental health isn’t just a personal issue — it has ripple effects on work, relationships, and our collective well-being.

Offer broad access to support: EAPs are an excellent resource for organizations and individuals, providing free and easy access to confidential counseling services and crisis support.

Build continuity of care: In times of upheaval, people change locations, routines, and social contexts. Be proactive by creating a plan and tailoring support to meet these challenges.
