October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 06, 2022

Domestic violence is not always easy to recognize—for a variety of reasons. First, it’s not always violent, and it can include a variety of behaviors that come on gradually and may not be obvious at first.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an opportunity to elaborate on how domestic violence refers to a variety of behaviors where one partner within an intimate relationship tries to exert power or control over the other. These behaviors can take many forms, including:

  • Physical, like slapping, punching, or kicking.
  • Psychological, like isolating the partner from friends or family or humiliating or belittling them.
  • Financial, like limiting the partner’s access to working, spending, or going to school.

If you recognize these behaviors, it’s important to reach out to a trusted family member or friend for emotional support. Also, contact your Assistance Program for additional information, resources, and support.
