Strength in Support: BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental health affects every person, regardless of background or culture, yet access to support has not been equally accessible. Every July, BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month recognizes the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and people of color: the cultural strengths communities carry, the barriers many have faced, and the care every community deserves.

How systemic inequities shape mental health

Mental health does not exist in isolation. It is shaped by the everyday conditions where we live, work, learn, and gather. Policies like redlining, unequal school funding, and discriminatory lending have long shaped where people can live, what schools they can access, and how easily they can build financial stability. Those effects still echo today. Where these barriers persist, they can raise the risk of chronic stress, anxiety, and depression, and make it harder to find care that feels accessible and understanding.

When mental health needs go unseen or unsupported, disparities can deepen and ripple across generations. Naming the systems behind them is part of changing them.

What individuals can do

Individuals play a real role in closing these gaps. A few starting points:

  • Listen without rushing to fix, minimize, or explain someone’s experience
  • Point colleagues toward available resources, like the Assistance Program, when it feels relevant
  • Model help-seeking behavior yourself, which reduces stigma for everyone around you

Working toward change together

Change comes from many directions at once: communities leading the way, counselors meeting people where they are, and organizations building supportive cultures. Each conversation, each connection to care, and each barrier removed moves us toward a world where everyone’s emotional health can thrive.

Through your AllOne Health benefits, you have access to master’s-level counselors who listen first and understand how culture, identity, community, and everyday stress all shape mental health. You decide what to share and what support fits you.

These services are free, confidential, and available to you and your family members, 24/7/365. To learn more, visit allonehealth.com/member-support.

Strength shows up in many forms, and reaching for support is one of them.
