How HR Can Support Employees Supporting Loved Ones with Mental Health Diagnoses

Many employees are caregivers — not just of children or aging parents, but of partners, siblings, and friends with mental health conditions. These responsibilities can be emotionally taxing and impact work performance, yet often go unacknowledged.

What HR Can Do:

  • Acknowledge Caregiving Roles
Recognize that employees supporting loved ones may face unpredictable stress. Flexibility and understanding go a long way.
  • Create a Culture of Compassion
Offer empathy and respect in conversations about family-related mental health concerns. Avoid judgment or over-questioning.
  • Promote EAP Services for Families
Many EAPs extend support to household members. Make sure employees know this — and encourage use.
  • Offer Manager Guidance
Train managers on how to sensitively support team members who are struggling due to external caregiving demands.
  • Encourage Self-Care Without Guilt
Caregivers often put themselves last. Make mental health days, PTO, and support groups accessible and judgment-free.

By supporting the whole person — including the role they play outside of work — you send a powerful message about what kind of employer you are.
