Now that parents and kids have adjusted to the new routines of summer, the calendar reminds us that it’s time to get ready for the new school year ahead. For anyone looking for more hours in the day, the following tips can help avoid morning chaos, afternoon headaches, and late-night stress.
Prepare to be prepared
Before diving in and digging deep to tackle back-to-school to-do’s, take time to feel prepared. Ask yourself, “What about back-to-school time is the most stressful?” Think about what you can let go of, what you can get help with, what you would change. Imagine a daily routine and structure that prioritizes your well-being and reflects what matters most to you and your family.
Share ownership
Everyone can do something, and sharing ownership of tasks, responsibilities and specialties amongst household members will prevent chores and errand running from becoming overwhelming. When kids know what they’re responsible for and take initiative for their things, it also helps build resilience and self-reliance long-term.
Get enough z’s
It’s amazing how much waking up 15 minutes earlier can improve mood, reduce stress, and boost energy. It’s even more amazing how much an hour of missed sleep can hurt it. Find the best hour to turn off the lights, maintain a consistent sleep time, and get the recommended eight hours of sound sleep. Having a smooth and unrushed morning can set the tone for an entire day.
Eat smart
One of the biggest mistakes people make this time of year is letting a busy schedule get in the way of eating healthy. A meal plan, daily breakfast, lunches packed the night before, and healthy snacks for on-the-go, will make things easier on your wallet, health, and schedule.
Self-assess
Feeling constantly rushed, overwhelmed, stressed, and spread thin is a sign that things may be out of control and it is time to make some changes. Assess what’s working and what’s not, evaluate what is within or beyond control, and get serious about the best and most effective use of time.
